community/plasma-workspace: enable SDDM Wayland session

Merged Bart Ribbers requested to merge PureTryOut/aports:community_sddm-wayland into master
1 unresolved thread

SDDM will use KWin as it's compositor to start in Wayland mode. This is a step to being able to run Plasma completely without X11 installed (except for XWayland).

  • Now confirmed on my desktop, this works just fine now, awesome! I'll wait for 3.21 to be released and will then merge this.

    • @Sodomon just a thumbs down is useless. Please tell me why you disapprove of this change and also why I as the single maintainer of KDE Plasma in Alpine should bother keep supporting X11 which just gives me more work.

Note that SDDM itself doesn't depend on KWin now. It can use KWin but will need either configuration by the user to do so or Plasma Workspace to be installed. There is configuration to use Weston and if the user installs xorg-server they can still use it with that.

XORG is the standard, wayland is still very green, maybe, yes, it can be used, but it still has a slow and discouraging development, that's why I think that keeping x11 support would be good, at least until wayland is really worth it.

    • the standard

An old one that's being replaced. Wayland is the new standard, and people should adopt. Plasma already defaults to it since 6.0 and I have no personal need or interest in maintaining X11 support. Wayland is worth it. If you want to keep X11 support in Plasma for some reason, step up to maintain it. Currently I'm the only one maintaining the entirety of KDE in Alpine and I have no interest in supporting deprecated configurations like that.

That said, you can just install xorg-server and as long as plasma-workspace isn't installed SDDM will still use that just fine. I mentioned this already.

I'm not saying that wayland should not be adopted, just that it is not at a level of stability that is worthwhile, it has too many bugs, something that almost does not happen in X11, but I understand your point, it must be frustrating to maintain support for x11 when only you keep the KDE plasma environment in alpine.

Wayland is a good alternative, but as I said, it is still very green and far from what it promised.

(I guess that's just my point of view).
