R 4.4.0 has been released today (2024-04-24). This MR does:

abump R-4.4.0
enable libdeflate for faster (de)compression of lazy-load databases, preferred from R 4.4.0 (a configure warning is issued if not found and not disabled)
finally run the provided make check, now compatible with Alpine Linux thanks to upstream changes
