Problems trying out Alpine; unable to install any package; poor/missing instructions
Expected: complete instructions for getting a recent alpine distro running to the point where I can install packages.
Actual: there are no such instructions.
To wit, `apk add -U nginx` yields `ERROR: unsatisfiable constraints: nginx(missing): required by world[nginx]`. The same is true for all other packages.
Also, on boot you’re given a login prompt without any further instruction. Luckily I know a little about Linux so I typed ‘root’ and it worked. But many people wouldn’t know about this.
I really like software minimalism, but you’ve got to be kind to your users if you want adoption. Not everyone is a Linux guru, or knows all that much about busybox or Alpine, etc. Please, if you improve the docs, let me know and I’ll try it again. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to use ubuntu images. At the very least a more instructive/helpful message at login would be helpful. The requirement to run a setup script is pretty well buried in your docs. https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Alpine\_setup\_scripts
Note: I’m using VirtualBox 5.1.26 on macOS 10.12.5 to run Alpine 3.6.2 and was hoping to install docker and give https://github.com/gliderlabs/docker-alpine a try, but was foiled by the inability to install packages.
The experience I want to have with Alpine is 1) download ISO, 2) run ISO in VirtualBox, 3) get a command line, 4) install packages. I am assuming that this is the experience most new users would want when trying a new, somewhat fringe, distro, although perhaps I am wrong?
