Description

Variable font is parametrized version of OpenType font format that can provide various weights by just one font file for instance. Variable Noto fonts helps decreasing the file size without sacrificing language coverage. Fedora Linux already uses variable Noto fonts and they estimates that migrating to variable fonts affects the size by the factor of 1/2 to 1/10 [1, 2].

For those unfamiliar: These aren't "variable0width" fonts ("variable0width" traditionally being the opposite of "fixed0width" aka "monospace" fonts).

These are variable weight fonts, which may or may not be variable width. Essentially, the same font file has enough metadata to build the Regular, Bold, Extra Bold, Italic or any intermediate permutation programmatically.

AFAIK, FreeType has supported these since 2.8 (2017).
