setup-xorg-base not working ?

This is (probably ?) related to my earlier issue (ticket 16166 : Xorg startx: not found after upgrading from 3.19 to 3.20)

I would expect that invoking "setup-xorg-base" would result in a basic/functional/... working X environment where I can launch programs with startx (e.g.: startx /usr/bin/remmina). Alas this does not seem to be the case. More specifically I get or (1) a black screen, frozen keyboard,... or (2) the remmina window with garbled output and frozen keyboard. The only solution being to remotely login and kill the relevant processes.

I found this out by doing a fresh install of Alpine Linux (so no other packages lingering around any more). I'm quite sure this used to work (give or take installing some extra drivers/fonts/...).

As a test I installed the XFCE desktop environment and this works "out of the box"...

remark :

The wiki doesn't help too much because it contains a lot of outdated data ? The best solution would be that "someone" (*) cleaned it up.

An alternative might be that "as a rule" the version of Alpine Linux where the wiki originally related to is mentioned ? Gives us noobs a fighting chance to solve chicken-egg problems...

I managed to "solve my problem". After some testing the (my) minimum steps to get a working startx environment are :

• setup-xorg-base => black screen with cursor when invoking startx
• apk add font-dejavu => normal application start up when invoking startx (as root)
• this still freezes the keyboard/mouse when invoked as a normal user. As to the arch BBS : make Xwrapper config cat /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config allowed_users=anybody needs_root_rights=yes => Solves the "user problem".

So actually the original problem was two fold :

• black screen when invoking startx (because of missing font)
• no keyboard/mouse (because of root/user permissions ?)

The only thing I possibly did different was installing from root (as opposed to sudo), but then again, the XFCE setup did work...

Solutions I can see are :

• change setup-xorg-base to work "as intended" (?)
• or : an extra entry in setup-desktop (e.g. startx)
• or : update the wiki, which I wouldn't mind doing, but I don't like polluting it with too specialised information (my setup) for a "minor problem" which shouldn't exist anyway (or "everybody" has enough background to find the solutions by them selves anyhow).
