OpenSMTPd is broken after upgrading to Alpine 1.17.0 (incompatible with OpenSSL 3)

It seems that !25393 (merged) has been reverted. So after upgrading to Alpine 3.17.0 with OpenSMTPd 6.8.0p2-r5, sending mail is impossible. The server disconnects, logs show the following error:

smtp disconnected reason="io-error: error:0A080006:SSL routines::EVP lib"

Presumably, this is the result of OpenSSL 3 being used.

Downgraded to Alpine 6.16.3 again, OpenSMTPd 6.8.0p2-r4 is installed. Identical setup, working fine.
