[squeekboard] The new squeekboard terminal layout hates me - also, potential accessibility & workflow issue?
It seems like the squeekboard layout was changed: !10331 (diffs)
As I expressed in a detailed write-up here, I think this layout both is possibly kind of bad for many people, as well as made me really wonder how much testing was done before it was put in: https://gitlab.com/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/issues/679#note_380303169 (also left a write-up here before I realized it was the wrong spot: https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/squeekboard/-/issues/213 )
In general, it surprises me Alpine would deviate from upstream squeekboard with such a vastly different layout to start with. It feels like a better workflow to generally bring such massive layout changes to upstream first, where then hopefully such accessibility concerns are fleshed out more with more eyes involved. It can really be a bit of an issue if this hits the wrong people out of the blue and suddenly they struggle to even type
Edit: also just to explain the accessibility angle more, this layout change feels a bit like catering to perfect eyesight and precision people, while leaving others in the dust. Being not in that precision group myself, seeing this trend now re-appear (osk-sdl used to do something similar) just feels a bit sad, like me and others are kind of forgotten about. So it'd be nice if keeping a wider range of people in general UI/UX changes in mind was on the priority list for the future, to keep the majority of users on board and in the state of being able to use their device ok
