community/netpbm: doc package needs work
The doc package for netpbm has some issues. The netpbm approach to documentation is html based and described here.
Issues with the current -doc package
- /usr/bin/manweb is the utility provided for viewing the html files in a man like way. It's installed by the netpbm package, not by netpbm-doc.
- /usr/bin/manweb is a perl script, netpbm-extras was created with a perl dependency but neither netpbm nor netpbm-doc currently depend on perl.
- /usr/bin/manweb looks for /etc/manweb.conf which isn't included in netpbm or subpackages.
- All the man 1,3,5 files installed by -doc are just stubs that refer you to the doc url at sourceforge.
This is my issue as the new maintainer of the netpbm aport. I'm opening this issue for comments on how best to fix it. The .html files included with -doc edge package under usr/share/doc/netpbm/html/
are good provided you have an application to view them. The current stable package only includes .url
files which just point you to the sourceforge site.
My inclination is to not provide the stub man pages at all since they refer you to the website and don't mention the locally installed .html files, so they don't help a user discover the local .html. On the other hand, at least you get something with eg. 'man pamcomp`, even if it just points you online and away from the local .html.
The stub manpage also doesn't mention the local manweb
script so even if I get that working correctly with perl and a .conf file, that's not very discoverable either without going online.
