xscreensaver in 3.11 complains that it is very old

When I execute xscreensaver in 3.11, I get splash stating that

WARNING: This version is very old!
Please upgrade!

I'm not sure what the correct thing here is. jwz is fairly clear about not wanting to have his softwared patched to remove this nag. On the other hand, Alpine is not a rolling distro, so there is not way to upgrade this. And it is legal under the license to do the patch.

Any ideas how to approach this?
